His mother is the world's richest black woman so it's little surprise that Folarin Alakija's wedding was a lavish, no-expense spared, fairytale affair. Folarin, who is one of 66-year-old oil tycoon Folorunsho Alakija's four sons, married Iranian beauty Nazanin Jafarian Ghaissarifar in an extravagant bash at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire over the weekend, which is estimated to have cost around £5m. The father-of-one, who is in his late 30s and lost his first wife to cancer, tied the knot to his stunning wife in front of friends, family and celebrities, including Victoria's Secret Angel, Shanina Shaik. While Folarin makes his money as an entrepreneur, investor and cinematographer, it's his mother who has an estimated fortune of $2.1 billion. Forbes rank her as the 14th richest person in Africa but the richest woman in the country. She is number 80 on its global Power Women list and overtook Oprah Winfrey as the richest woman of African descent i

Brazilian police said Monday they were investigating after a Swedish-Iranian man who ran a hostel in a Rio slum was found dead. "The circumstances of the death of Millad Mille Hosseini Ballai, a Swedish-Iranian, are the subject of an investigation," a police spokesman told AFP. The spokesman said authorities were looking for witnesses following the death of Ballai, 34, adding police were awaiting the results of initial inquiries. The body of Ballai, who ran the "Casa Alto Vidigal" hostel in the Vidigal slum near Rio's well-heeled coastal district of Leblon, was found late Saturday. Police were sifting through closed circuit television footage of the hostel to determine if anybody saw the victim attacked. "We have seized several items, including money which would appear to exclude the possibility of death following a burglary or an operation by an organized group," web portal G1 quoted police commissioner Rivaldo Barbosa as saying.

A murder victim who was beaten and set on fire following rumours he was a paedophile was "failed" by officers, Bristol's police chief has admitted. Bijan Ebrahimi's body was found in July in Brislington after he was reportedly harassed by residents who believed he had taken indecent images of children. Lee James, 24, of Capgrave Crescent, has admitted his murder. Mr Ebrahimi's family say they want to see justice for those who "failed to protect" him, including the police. A family statement, said: "It should not be forgotten that Bijan had been the victim of hate crimes for a number of years before his death, both due to his race and his physical disability. "It was for this reason that the police should have taken especially seriously his calls for help in the days before he was murdered." Avon and Somerset's chief constable said the force and other agencies would need to look at "what went wrong here".

Mohamad knew too well the risks of being a gay man in Iran. Physical abuse? Yes, he had friends who had been beaten by police. Imprisoned? Yep, people he knew were thrown in jail for months because of their sexual orientation. Execution? It wasn't out of the question. "I have a very (big) problem in Iran," Mohamad said recently from the safety and serenity of the San Damiano Franciscan retreat in the tree-covered hills of Danville. "I cannot very easily be (gay) in Iran. I have to hide to live in Iran." Mohamad, 33, who entered the United States on July 22 with official refugee status, spoke on the condition that his last name not be published. He fears reprisals against his family if it becomes widely known that he is gay. Understandably so -- according to a recent opinion piece on The Jerusalem Post website, at least 146 gays or suspected gays have been executed in Iran since 1979. The estranged husband of the Queens mom suspected of savagely beating their twin toddlers — one fatally — flung himself to his death from the top of a Midtown hotel, where his twisted body was discovered on Saturday, police sources told The Post. Mohammad Torabi, 31, was found at 1:20 p.m., sprawled atop a third-floor air-conditioning unit at the Renaissance New York Hotel on East 57th Street. Police believe he plunged from the roof of the 17-story hotel sometime Friday and had been dead for a day before he was spotted. The unemployed Manhattan man left behind no note, but police say they are investigating the death as a suicide. News of Torabi’s death came as his wife, Tina, 30, sat in Rikers for the near-fatal beating of their 13-month-old son, Kian — and as coroners prepared an autopsy report on his twin sister, Elaina, who was found dying in the family’s Flushing home on Wednesday night. Both twins suffered “severe body trauma,” police have said. By Saturday nig

One week before he became Winnipeg's 17th homicide victim of 2019, a gifted international student spoke to his father at home in Iran, who was planning to visit him in Canada in August. Now, the family of 26-year-old Pedram Roshaeian is in mourning, and trying to find out why he ended up dead May 24 in a home on the 900 block of Greencrest Avenue. "We are desperately awaiting to receive his body in Iran to hold the funeral ceremony," Saima Rizvi said Thursday. "We don't have any family in Canada to hold a memorial service," said the woman, who is married to Roshaeian's cousin, Behzad Sharifzadeh. The couple lives in the United Arab Emirates, and provided a home for the young man when he arrived from Iran at age 17 to study at the American University in Dubai. "In Dubai, he had us as his family, and his parents came from Iran, visiting him often," she said. Roshaeian attended classes at the university in order to improve his E

A Woodland Hills man who used a machete to torture his  estranged wife and a former music industry executive  while holding them hostage has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. Behnam Vasseghi, 58, was sentenced Monday immediately after pleading no contest to two counts each of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and making criminal threats and one count each of first-degree burglary, stalking and corporal injury to a spouse, according to court records. Various other counts, including torture and aggravated mayhem, were dismissed as part of the plea agreement. Gigi Vasseghi had a restraining order against her estranged husband when he went to her new boyfriend Jerry Sharell's Woodland Hills home on Sept. 15 last year, the LAPD reported. Vasseghi reportedly held the two for more than five hours, interrogating Sharell and slashing his neck when he got answers that upset him. Gigi Vasseghi was able to escape and call police, but not before her estranged husba
An American teenager was banned from buying an iPad at an Apple store in Georgia because the sales assistant heard her speaking the Iranian language Farsi. Sahar Sabet, 19, had been chatting to her uncle in the dialect before trying to purchase an iPad at the store in Alpharetta, near Atlanta. But the Apple employee, who was also Iranian, refused to sell it to her, citing the 'bad relations' between Iran and the United States. 'He said 'I just can't sell this to you. Our countries have such bad relations'', the teenager told WSBTV . Ms Sabet said she was shocked and embarrassed by the refusal, particularly because she was a U.S. citizen and already owned a number of Apple products including an iPhone and a Macbook. '(It was) very hurtful, very embarrassing. I actually walked out in tears,' she said. Ms Sabet was refused the iPad a second time after returning to the store with a TV crew. On this occasion, the same Iranian staffer pulled out

It was the Ramazan Cup [named after the Muslim month of fasting] games and the matches lasted until midnight because they could not begin until an hour after dusk. That night something happened in my life. All I can remember is that I was sitting in the back seat. The car suddenly t

A man convicted of luring girls as young as 14 into a life of prostitution has become the first person ever convicted of human trafficking in British Columbia. Reza Moazami was found guilty Monday on 30 of 36 charges, including one of human trafficking and multiple counts of living off the avails of prostitution with coercion, sexual assault and sexual exploitation. "It is apparent ... that Mr. Moazami created an atmosphere of fear among the girls who worked for him as prostitutes," Justice Catherine Bruce wrote in her 188-page decision. "Once (the victim) was a part of his prostitution business, he maintained strict control over her movements and her behaviour. He isolated her from her friends outside of the prostitution business. He made her fear the police." His trial heard that between February 2009 and his arrest on Oct. 7, 2011, Moazami lured, coerced and threatened 11 victims aged 14 to 19 into selling their bodies for his profit. Nine of t

No one knows exactly why 29-year-old Iranian costume design student Mahtab Savoji turned up dead in the Venice lagoon last week. Her body, nude except for a string of pearls around her neck, got tangled up between two water taxi drivers near the Via Cipro dock in Venice Lido on January 28. After fishing the corpse out of the lagoon, a Venetian coroner determined that the woman—then unidentified—had been strangled to death at least 24 hours before her body was thrown into the murky water. Her lungs did not contain water from the Venice lagoon, and her body showed no apparent signs of violence other than strangulation. But no one knew who she was or why she was there. Meanwhile, 250 miles away, the day after the mysterious body floated to the surface of the lagoon, Savoji’s friends in Milan—where she had shared an apartment with two hospitality workers from India since November—were starting to get worried. Savoji hadn’t been answering her cellphone, which wasn’t like

A dramatic cat-eye—“you can never go wrong with liner,” says the model, actress, and singer Nazanin Mandi, who married her longtime beau, the R&B musician Miguel, in front of close friends and family at the Hummingbird Nest Ranch in Los Angeles on Saturday. “I tried to keep things very authentic and true to myself. It’s not about becoming another person on your wedding day.” That said, a little inspiration from the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, and Brigitte Bardot never hurt anybody. “[Iconic] Hollywood starlets were my only references,” says Mandi from over the phone a mere two weeks before walking down the aisle. “I just love a classic look.” In a lace white Monique Lhuiller gown, her nails nude, brows full, and dark hair blown to perfection with a trio of Oribe styling cream, R&Co dry shampoo, and Color Wow thickening spray, then tied up in a face-framing chignon, Mandi was every inch the elegant bride. “Traditional but
The magical beliefs and practices of a group of people known as the Nacirema are interesting because they are so unusual. The Nacirema have many magical beliefs, but the most interesting are those about their own bodies and how they should be cared for. The Nacirema are a group of people who live in the territory north of the Tarahuamare people of Mexico. No one knows much about their origin, but traditional legends say they came from the east. Their customs have been studied for many years, yet their culture is still poorly understood. Body Ritual Among the Nacirema The Nacirema are extremely concerned about the health and appearance of their bodies. They believe that certain rituals and ceremonies must be practiced to maintain and improve the condition of their bodies. Though it is not unusual for people to be concerned about their own bodies, the rituals practiced by the Nacirema are unusual and extremely time consuming. The main belief of the Nacirema appears to be

Locals in Lecanvey, Westport, Co Mayo, say internationally acclaimed novelist Marsha Mehran, who was found dead in her apartment on Wednesday, led a "reclusive" life and they saw little of her. The remains of the bestselling, 36-year-old author of such books as Pomegranate Soup and Rosewater and Soda Bread are to be cremated next week. GardaĆ say there is nothing suspicious about her death. Toxciology tests are to be carried out as a follow-up to a postmortem to determine the cause of the sudden death. Residents of Lecanvey, a seaside village overlooking Clew Bay, say they saw little if anything of Ms Mehran over the years. One local who uses the local beach frequently today said he never met the writer out walking or socially over the years, although he was aware of her presence in the locality. Ms Mehran’s body was discovered by the letting agent of her apartment at Pier House, Lecanvey. There was no sign of any break-in or suggestion of foul play. The dead woma

A man wrongly imprisoned for nine years will finally don his cap and gown at New York University's commencement ceremony Wednesday. Kian Khatibi, 35, languished in state prisons throughout his 20s for a crime he didn't commit, turning his aspirations of getting an undergraduate degree and going to law school into nothing but a dream. But his hopes became a reality after his brother confessed to the brutal assault, allowing Khatibi to walk free three years ago. "I had no idea that I had a promising future ahead of me," Khatibi told the Daily News.
